The short version
We don’t sell your data. We don’t rent it. We don’t do anything sketchy with it. This site exists to help you have a better camping trip — not to monetize your personal information.
The longer version is below, but that’s the honest summary.
Who we are
Gone Campin’ is a camping blog run by Weekend Wren, based in the United States. We publish gear guides, camp cooking recipes, campsite reviews, and packing lists for everyday car campers.
If you have questions about this policy, you can reach us at [email protected].
What information we collect
Information you give us directly
When you sign up for our email list (The Weekender Newsletter), we collect your email address. That’s it. We don’t ask for your name, phone number, address, or anything else unless you choose to include it in a contact form message.
If you contact us through our contact form, we collect whatever you include in that message — typically your name, email address, and the contents of your message.
Information collected automatically
Like most websites, we collect some basic technical information when you visit:
- Pages you visit and how long you spend on them
- The type of device and browser you’re using
- Your general geographic location (country or city level — not your street address)
- How you found the site (search engine, social media, another website, etc.)
This information is collected through Google Analytics and is used to understand what content is helpful so we can make more of it. We don’t use it to identify you personally.
Cookies
This site uses cookies. Cookies are small text files stored on your device that help the site function and help us understand how people use it.
We use cookies for:
- Analytics — Google Analytics uses cookies to track site usage in aggregate
- Affiliate tracking — Amazon and other affiliate programs use cookies to track purchases made through our links (more on this below)
- Functionality — some features of the site require cookies to work correctly
You can disable cookies in your browser settings at any time. Doing so may affect how some parts of the site work.
Amazon Associates and affiliate links
Gone Campin’ is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to amazon.com.
This means that when you click a product link on this site and make a purchase on Amazon, we may earn a small commission — at no extra cost to you. The price you pay is exactly the same whether you use our link or go to Amazon directly.
Amazon places tracking cookies on your device when you click our links. These cookies are governed by Amazon’s own privacy policy, which you can read at amazon.com/privacy. We do not have access to any personal information Amazon collects from you.
We only recommend products we genuinely believe in. Affiliate commissions help keep this site running, but they never influence which products we recommend or what we write about them.
Email and newsletter
If you subscribe to The Weekend Wren newsletter, your email address is stored with our email service provider (ConvertKit). We use it to send you camping tips, new posts, and occasional gear recommendations.
We will never:
- Sell your email address to anyone
- Share it with third parties for their marketing purposes
- Use it to send you unrelated spam
- Include direct affiliate links in email newsletters (Amazon Associates terms prohibit this)
You can unsubscribe at any time using the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any email. We won’t make it difficult or ask you why you’re leaving.
Third-party services
Running a website involves third-party tools. Here are the ones we use and what they do with data:
| Service | Purpose | Their privacy policy |
|---|---|---|
| Google Analytics | Site traffic and usage statistics | policies.google.com/privacy |
| ConvertKit | Email newsletter delivery | convertkit.com/privacy |
| Amazon Associates | Affiliate product links | amazon.com/privacy |
| WordPress.com / Hosting provider | Website hosting and infrastructure | Varies by host |
Each of these services has its own privacy policy that governs how they handle data. We’ve chosen providers with solid reputations, but we encourage you to review their policies if you have questions.
Data retention
Email subscribers — we keep your email address for as long as you remain subscribed. When you unsubscribe, your address is removed from our active list. Depending on our email provider’s settings, it may be retained in an inactive state for a period before permanent deletion. You can request immediate permanent deletion by emailing us at [email protected].
Contact form messages — messages sent through our contact form are retained in our email inbox for up to 12 months, then deleted.
Analytics data — Google Analytics data is retained for 14 months by default, after which it is automatically deleted from Google’s systems.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have certain rights regarding your personal data. We want to make these easy to exercise regardless of where you’re located.
You have the right to:
- Access — request a copy of any personal data we hold about you
- Correction — ask us to correct inaccurate information
- Deletion — ask us to delete your personal data
- Opt-out — unsubscribe from our email list at any time
- Portability — request your data in a portable format
To exercise any of these rights, email us at [email protected]. We’ll respond within 30 days.
California residents (CCPA) — we do not sell personal information. If you have additional questions about your California privacy rights, contact us at the email above.
European residents (GDPR) — our lawful basis for processing your email address is consent, which you can withdraw at any time by unsubscribing. Our lawful basis for analytics is legitimate interest. If you believe we’ve handled your data improperly, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
Children’s privacy
Gone Campin’ is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at [email protected] and we will delete it promptly.
Security
We take reasonable technical measures to protect the information we collect. Our site uses HTTPS encryption, our email provider uses industry-standard security practices, and we limit access to any personal data to only what’s necessary to operate the site.
No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure. We can’t guarantee absolute security, but we take it seriously and will notify you promptly in the event of any breach that affects your personal data.
Changes to this policy
If we make significant changes to this privacy policy, we’ll update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page and note it in our newsletter. We won’t make changes that substantially reduce your privacy rights without giving you advance notice and an opportunity to opt out.
